Drones: technology, types, and future applications

Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive and technical overview of drones and unmanned systems, covering their definition, classification, architectures, and operating principles. Throughout the program, students explore in depth the different types of UAV platforms, including multirotor, fixed-wing, hybrid VTOL, unmanned helicopters, blimps, and parafoil systems, as well as non-aerial unmanned vehicles such as UGVs and USVs.

The course examines the main professional applications of drones across industries such as industrial inspection, surveying and mapping, precision agriculture, security, emergency response, logistics, and defense. A functional, mission-oriented perspective is adopted, focusing on sensors, autonomy, communications, navigation, and data processing as key enablers of professional UAV operations.

In addition, the course introduces the regulatory and certification frameworks governing unmanned systems, including airworthiness concepts, RTCA/EUROCAE standards (DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160), EASA Special Condition – Light UAS, and risk-based methodologies such as SORA and SAIL.

Finally, the course explores the future of drones and unmanned systems, addressing trends such as increasing autonomy, airspace integration and UTM, certification maturity, cooperative and swarm operations, and the social, ethical, and environmental challenges facing the industry.
